Etymology: Middle English wrastlen, wrestlen, from Old English wr[AE]stlian,
frequentative of wr[AE]stan intransitive verb is the act of physical engagement between two competitors
competing for a physical advantage. It is one of the oldest known forms of
martial arts, having been documented in the Old Testament and the Mahabharata.
As Cultures strived to survive, wrestling became an intrinsic part of many
cultures as a practical form of self-defense and Military Training. Physical
techniques which embody the style of wrestling are clinching, holding,
locking, and leverage.
Some popular disciplines which can be considered wrestling styles today are collegiate
wrestling, sambo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, sumo wrestling, judo,
Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling. Wrestling popularity has grown so much at times, market demands
for staged wrestling, commonly known as professional wrestling, have been developed
Wrestling is commonly
viewed as both barbaric, and phony, neither of which is really
what wrestling is. Wrestling is a sport that involves self
defense, and competition.
The reason that wrestling
is viewed to be fake/phony, by most people, is the direction in
which "Professional Wrestling" has gone. The televised
wrestling that is out there, is completely different from Sumo
Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, or even freestyle wrestling.
A type of wrestling that
has come along and gained more popularity recently is known as
"Backyard Wrestling". Which is where the competitors
compete in either a backyard setting as stated, or in a renegade
type of place/way, and usually does not take place in a ring.
Backyard Wrestling is a very dangerous sport, but it is more
common place than people are willing to believe.
Many people who are backyard renegades sustain serious injury,
because some of them do not know how to take bumps in the right
way or how to perform a maneuver in the right way, and end up severely
hurt, and in some cases paralyzed. Not to take away from the
sport, some of them really know what they are doing, and just
enjoy the backyard part of it.
Backyard Wrestling as it is
known, is considered a "DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME" sort
of sport.
